Chicago singer R. Kelly‘s publicized legal woes continue to mount. New reports claim the crooner has been charged with a sexual crime involving an underage Minnesota girl.
According to reports, a press conference went down today and announced the alleged crime dates back to 2001.
The allegation follows a total of 18 counts of serious sexual misconduct and other charges brought against the singer last month in Chicago and New York, among other charges. Kelly is charged with two counts of engaging in prostitution with an individual under 18 years old and offering to hire for sexual purposes a person under 18, Hennepin County State’s Attorney Mike Freeman said during a news conference. The victim, an autograph seeker, was paid $200 to have sexual relations with the musician at his Minneapolis hotel, according to Paul Blume at Fox 9 in the city. (Variety)
Last week, a judge shut down his request to get granted bail in a publicized New York sex crimes case.
R. Kelly was denied bail on racketeering and sexual abuse charges that allege he recruited young girls for sexual abuse at concerts across the country during an arraignment hearing in Brooklyn Federal Court on Friday morning. The singer, wearing blue prison togs over an orange shirt, pleaded not guilty to the charges through his attorneys. While he looked ahead through most of the hearing, he smiled and nodded briefly at girlfriends Joycelyn Savage and Azriel Clary, who were seated with two other family members. (Variety)
The same week, the Chicago native’s attorney filed a request to have him set free on bond.
Attorney Steve Greenberg filed a 12-page motion Thursday asking U.S. District Court Judge Harry Leinenweber to reconsider his decision to hold Kelly without bond pending his trial on numerous new federal chargesaccusing the 52-year-old of child pornography, enticement of a minor and obstruction of justice. “In this case, given Defendant’s lack of resources, willingness to submit to electronic monitoring, and lack of contact with minors, history of appearance, substantial monetary bond posted in State Court, and demonstrated ability to comply with bail restrictions, conditions could easily be fashioned,” Greenberg wrote in his motion. Kelly’s New York allegations are connected to multiple women including an unnamed fan and former radio station intern.
Kelly, 52, is charged in New York with exploiting five victims, identified only as “Jane Does.” According to court papers, they include one he met at one of his concerts and another at a radio station where she was an intern. (ABC News)
