Hey Patagonist! Please tell us how long have you been making music? Most importantly, how did you come up with your rap name?
I’ve been doing music for 11 years now. I was 11 when I started now I’m 22. A friend of mines named brandon came up with my rap name. After having a long discussion with brandon on the phone about good rap names to use he said “patagonist” I have to admit I didn’t like it at first. I was looking for something that would blend in well with my name “Patrick” but nothing else besides patagonist was working. Brandon said that the name would represent me well I could play the good guy( protagonist) or the bad (Antagonist) either way I’m a character.
What separates you from all the other rappers in your city?
I’m not trying to be what I’m not I’m just being myself and honing my ability. I Eliminate the yes men and surround myself with people who only want to see me grow.
When did you record your first ever song? What was that feeling like?
I recorded my first song in 2012 at my grandma house. My grandad has a home studio and he knew I wanted to make music so he taught me the basics like how to record myself then he left the room. After he left the room I recorded myself freestyling to a funky beat he had showed me. He came back and heard it and thought it was a solid. I was nervous when he heard it and I didn’t really like what I did with the record but he told me otherwise and then showed it to the family.
How are you coping with this whole Covid 19 situation?
Has it delayed any new music production by any chance? I am little bit sad I haven’t been able to do shows like that but COVID hasn’t ruin anything for me musically on the production side of things.
Please breakdown the creative process of your new album “Naker”.
Naker wasn’t even a planned project at first. I just happened to go through a breakup at the time and wrote about it. The songs came natural since it was fresh. The beats came from producers I know or met over the years( mace the goat, clout Moses, Sounddesine.)The album was easy to set up because of the story I was telling I just had to the remember the beginning to the end of it all. I mixed the project at my home studio.
We have to ask, with all this social discourse and revolt, protesting and rioting, exposed police brutality toward blacks and BLM, how do you feel about this? We would love your perspective on the climate we are living in right now? I feel due to the fact that the world lacks communication the protesting and rioting Is gone to happen. Our oppressors never listen to blacks they hand us whatever shuts us up to distract us from everything else and it shouldn’t be that way. If we all knew how to listen and take in consideration a lot of things the world we’re in today wouldn’t even exists as far as the riots and protests. There are a lot of officers on the force who were raised/ walk around with a lot hate in their system. I don’t like the fact that there’s too much police brutality it makes me feel unsafe around our so called “protectors.” Until we as a whole come together mainly effort from our opposers/oppressors it’s gone to continue to be this way.
If it came down to 1 ALBUM only, what underground Hip Hop album would you consider THE BEST OF ALL TIME!!!???……One 1 album you can choose.
Black star’s black star album is my all time favorite
Here it is! Our most popular question! What is your definition of “underground hip hop”?
Underground hip hop is a hidden gem. An album that people who listens to hip hop would only know. A project that is not talked about much.
