Not everyone is a fan of Jacquees.
Following his claim to the R&B throne, an online petition has been launched to ban the Cash Money crooner from covering songs.
“As a Black Community, we have to figure out how we getting rid of Jacquees,” writes Ricky Fields, who started the petition on change.org on Dec. 21.
The petition has gone viral. In just six days, it has received over 40,000 signatures. “He must be stopped!” wrote one of the supporters, Kashona Thompson. “He disrespected Keith Sweat, then I just heard his Dirty Diana cover. The boy has gone mad! Plus he dresses like a toddler.”
Jacquees made headlines earlier this month after declaring himself the King of R&B. “I just wanna let everybody know that I’m the king of R&B right now,” said Jacquees. “For this generation…I understand who dun came and who dun did that and that and that. But now it’s my turn. Jacquees the king of R&B.”
The 24-year-old has released covers of popular songs including Aaliyah’s “One in a Million,” Soul for Real’s “Candy Rain,” and Chris Brown’s “Yo (Excuse Me Miss).” In October, he dropped Quemix 3, the third installment in his mixtape series, which included covers of GoldLink, Ginuwine, and Daniel Caesar.
But his most popular remix has been Ella Mai’s “Trip.” The song racked up millions of streams before it was removed by Mai’s team due to copyright infringement. “When you monetize content you don’t own you are stealing and no one steals from 10 Summers,” wrote the song’s producer, Mustard.
