I look at this picture often. For all the shit we hear about “where are the Black dads?” what we all know is that Tracy Martin LOVED HIS SON. I had a chance to interview Tracy and ask him about this, and he remembered it like it was yesterday. He said he kissed Trayvon every day, told him how much he loved him, daily. He was loved. Today is Trayvon’s 24th birthday. But the truth is we never should’ve even seen this picture or known their names. Trayvon would’ve already graduated from college, maybe started a family of his own. Instead, we dream and wonder. This family not only had their son stolen from them, they were denied any semblance of justice. When I fight for justice, I often do it with this image in my mind. I love my son like Tracy loved Trayvon. I loathe how many famous names we know because systemic white supremacy took them from us.
