Almost everyone you meet is sad about the sudden death of Kobe Bryant, his daughter and the eight other individuals that died on Sunday while riding a helicopter to an afternoon game in California. But being sad does not change things. Getting angry actually does. Getting downright mad does.

This is why San Fernando Valley Rep. Brad Sherman has informed the public that he plans on introducing a bill that will direct the Federal Aviation Administration to make sure all helicopters have a terrain-safety system in the helicopter. In the ‘copter that the Bryants were on, there was no such system.

The bill will be called the Kobe Bryant and Gianna Bryant Helicopter Safety Act.

Terrain awareness systems are expensive and cost between $25,000 and $40,000 per helicopter. The devices do not actually prevent crashes, but they do provide a “detailed image of surrounding terrain and trigger auditory and visual warnings,” according to the Los Angeles Daily News.

Ironically, the National Safety Transportation Board recommended back in 2004 that helicopters should have this. This is the body that is conducting the investigation into the crash that took one of the greatest basketball players of all time away from us.
