No one would ever put this one together, but the collaboration was beautiful and made perfect sense once it all came together.
Lil’ Nas X told Beats 1 that he snatched the name when he was trolling on the internet:
“It’s been my internet alias for a minute,” said the rapper, referring to the name Nas. “The X wasn’t included at first. It was just Lil Nas. It was Lil Nas because when I first started rapping I wasn’t as serious so it was like, ‘Okay, every rapper’s name is starting with Lil lately.’ So I kind of got stuck with it. I added the X later on after I was more serious. It would stand for the amount of years, I felt, until I’m at the status where I’m considered legendary.”
But we in Hip-Hop know, he wanted to embody some of the genius of one of Hip-Hop’s Mt. Rushmore.
And so…
When Nasir Jones started rapping during his set, you forgot about all the other folk on special guesting on the performance and zeroed in on just how dope this moment was.
A touching Easter egg in the performance happened early on. While he start, lounging on a couch and strumming his guitar, he had Kobe’s jersey draped over the chair.
Also in the performance was K Pop band BTS, Diplo, Mason Ramsey and Billy Ray Cyrus.
When asked why did he hop on this track with the Lil version? He said “I just seen him break barriers with the country and Hip-Hop. And I think that this is a historic event.”
He also offered that this was about making a bridge between two generations in Hip-Hop. “So many years apart but we do the same thing.”
