Maybach Music Group’s Meek Mill made a big splash these past 12 months from dealing with the criminal justice system to dropping an epic Championships album. The hip-hop star has been reward by BET with its 2018 Man of the Year nod.
On Thursday, Meek’s Roc Nation management announced the big honor.
BET highlighted losses Meek suffered last year for helping ignite a monstrously successful 2018.
The power in the title of Meek Mill’s fourth studio album transcends the obvious—Championships, as in multiple, not singular. A detail so subtle its prime purpose was missed by many. Is Meek saying he’s made a career of collecting rings? Is he proclaiming that it’s “Trophy Life” from here on? What is clear is that Robert Rihmeek Williams’ path to the winner’s circle was a Game of Thrones bracket in which he was required to first win several championships. Isolate his 2018 victories and each alone would qualify a civilian’s year, or even life, as triumphant. (BET)
Recently, Meek delivered his energetic new “Championships Intro” music video.
After its first week of availability, Championships destroyed its competition on the sales chart.
Meek Mill’s Championships (Atlantic) has officially topped the HITS Top 50 Chart, moving around 208k. That included, a total of four debuts make up the Top 5, as Lil Baby’s Street Gossip (QC/Motown/Capitol), The 1975’s A Brief Inquiry Into Online Relationships (Interscope) and Ski Mask the Slump God’s Stokeley (Victor Victor Worldwide/Republic) make waves at #3, #4 and #5 with 84k, 61k and 52k, respectively.
