Lifetime has announced plans for a follow-up to its groundbreaking “Surviving R. Kelly” docuseries.
Hosted by Soledad O’Brien, “Surviving R. Kelly: The Impact” will focus on the aftermath of the documentary, which chronicled sexual abuse allegations against the singer, reports Deadline. The two-hour special will also feature interviews with journalists, legal experts, and psychologists, as well as an “in-depth look” at the singer’s controversial interview with Gayle King.
Following the premiere of “Surviving R. Kelly” in January, R. Kelly’s record label RCA Records dropped him as a result of the growing #MuteRKelly movement. Calls to sexual assault hotlines also increased by 35 percent. The Cook County attorney’s office eventually arrested and indicted Kelly on 10 counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse involving four victims dating back to 1998.
Over 26 million people have watched the documentary, which was named the recipient of the 2019 LA Press Club President’s Award for Impact on Media. Showrunner dream hampton was also recently named as one of TIME magazine’s 100 Most Influential People.
“Surviving R. Kelly: The Impact” will premiere Saturday, May 4, at 10 p.m. ET/PT on Lifetime.
