Just ahead of Sunday’s Super Bowl kick off, Hip-Hop was rocked with the news of 21 Savage being detained by ICE, stating he was in America on an expired visa. The arrest originally was a part of a traffic stop as Atlanta police pulled over the “a lot” creator on a trip with another rapper, Young Nudy. Since the arrest, fans have learned that 21 was an immigrant from the United Kingdom, he currently is still in custody.
Giving an update to fans and all parties concerned, 21’s lawyer has released a statement, which states ICE has refused to release the hitmaker and states he has had a pending U Visa application since 2017.
“ICE detained She’yaa Bin Abraham-Joseph, the well-known Atlanta based recording artist and songwriter also known as ’21 Savage’,” the statement reads. “Based upon incorrect information about prior criminal charges and now refusing to release him on bound of any amount, despite the fact that he as a pending U-Visa application (as the victim of crime) with USCIS, and that he has relief from removal available to him.
“ICE has not charged Mr. Abraham-Joseph with any crime. As a minor, his family overstayed their work visas, and he, like almost two million other children, was left without legal status through no faults of his own. This is a civil law violation, and the continued detention of Mr. Abraham-Joseph serves no other purpose than to unnecessarily punish him and try to intimidate him into giving up his right to remain in the United States.”
