L.A. Intersection to Be Named After Nipsey Hussle

Nipsey Hussle’s legacy lives on.

As fans continue to mourn his death, Nipsey’s hometown is paying homage to him. On Friday, the Los Angeles City Council is expected to introduce a motion to rename the intersection of Slauson Avenue and Crenshaw Boulevard as “Ermias ‘Nipsey Hussle’ Asghedom Square,” according to Councilman Marqueece Harris-Dawson, a friend of Hussle’s.

The news follows an online movement to name the intersection of Crenshaw and Slauson, where Nipsey was killed, to “Nipsey Hussle Way” in honor of the community icon. The petition on Change.org currently has over 480,000 signatures.

The 33-year-old rapper, who was shot and killed outside of his Marathon Clothing store last month, was celebrated for his activism and work in the community.

Harris-Dawson recalled his first meeting with Hussle at a 2013 rally against gun violence. “It was 8 in the morning at Crenshaw High School,” he told The New York Times. “And here was this guy who I knew had a show the night before. He was there with his daughter.”

A public memorial will be held at Staples Center in Los Angeles on Thursday. Earlier today, tickets for the “Celebration of Life” were distributed online and were gone within minutes. Organizers announced less than an hour later that no more tickets were available.

According to TMZ, the two-hour ceremony is expected to be followed by a lengthy procession that will travel roughly 25 miles past The Marathon Clothing store in South L.A. before ending at a funeral home in the Crenshaw district.
