Pharrell Williams & Kenya Barris Collab On Juneteenth Musical

As more companies are beginning to recognize Juneteenth, Netflix is reportedly in talks with Kenya Barris and Pharrell Williams about making a feature-length musical about Juneteenth.

According to Deadline, the streaming company, Barris and Williams are in the early stages of working up a plan for the project, and it will be separate from the live musical they announced back in 2018.

Williams is set to produce the project with his partner Mimi Valdes with Barris who will produce the project through his production company Khalabo Ink Society.

News of this comes after Pharrell announced that his home state of Virginia will recognize Juneteenth as a paid state holiday. In his speech, Williams stated how Virginia is the location where enslaved Africans first arrived when they were stolen from their homeland 400 years ago.

Virginia is the second state, next to Texas, to officially recognize Juneteenth as a paid holiday. New York City mayor, Bill de Blasio recently stated that the city of New York will recognize Juneteenth as a paid holiday beginning in 2021.
