Jazmine Sullivan Responds to Weight Loss Criticism

Jazmine Sullivan is firing back at body shamers.

Earlier this week, the R&B singer showed off her slimmer physique while on set of the video for her new single “Lost One.” She received mostly kind words from fans and celebrity friends including Missy Elliott, Chloe x Halle, and Melanie Fiona. But not everyone supported her new look, with some even saying she looked “sickly.”

“Omg i don’t know if this skinny is good on you,” commented one fan, while another added, “I hope that is from natural dieting mama.cause If not .it won’t last.be careful.”

In a message shared on Instagram Stories on Friday, Jazmine responded to those who took issue with her appearance. She revealed that she isn’t as “skinny” as she appears in the photo. She now weighs 180 pounds, but becoming skinny was never her goal.

“Last week some people dragged me saying I look sickly. I’m honestly a size 12. 180 lbs,” said the 33-year-old singer. “There’s nothing skinny abt me but my neck 😩😂 I’m 5’8 however, so I sometimes photograph a little leaner than I am. But I ain’t skinny and that was never my goal.”

She was inspired to lose weight and go vegan to support her mother, who is battling cancer. “My goal was to support my mother thru her battle w cancer by going vegan with her, and in turn it helped me as well. And I feel really good.”

She plans to continue to focus on her health and fitness. “I have a lot of things to work on in my journey and am not nearly the model for health and fitness. But I’m trying… And I’ll continue to do so w my momma! Bless ya’ll, love ya’ll,” she wrote before sharing some advice: “Stop talking bout people. Vote in November!”

Jazmine has been working on new music. In late August, she returned with “Lost One,” her first single in several years.
