JAY-Z Reportedly Urges Travis Scott Not to Perform at Super Bowl

Travis Scott may bring Astroworld to next year’s Super Bowl halftime show.

The Houston rapper will reportedly perform with the band during Super Bowl LIII at Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Feb. 3. However, JAY-Z is attempting to talk him out of it, according to Variety.

Hov has been critical of the NFL over its treatment of Colin Kaepernick, who has been drummed out of the league for “taking a knee” during the national anthem. Reps for both artists have not commented.

Travis references Kaepernick on the title track off his collaborative album with Quavo, Huncho Jack, Jack Huncho. “Take a knee like the ‘Niners (Kaepernick) / Join the team, don’t divide us (join them),” he raps.

Meek Mill has also spoken out against Travis performing at the big game. “He don’t need that he on fire already! Stay strong in this shit!” he tweeted.

It was previously reported that Rihanna turned down an offer to headline the 2019 Super Bowl halftime show in support of Colin Kaepernick.

Maroon 5 will reportedly be joined by three additional guests during their Super Bowl set. There are ongoing talks with OutKast’s Big Boi as well as Cardi B, who reportedly wants to perform one of her own hits as part of the 13-minute halftime show. It’s likely that Scott will perform at least one of his own songs, as well as Cardi.

Maroon 5 has been struggling to find a black act to take the stage with them. According to the Variety report, they have been in talks with Usher, Lauryn Hill, Nicki Minaj, and Mary J. Blige, who reportedly declined.

Bruno Mars, Cardi B, and Post Malone are scheduled to perform in Atlanta as part of the Bud Light Super Bowl Music Fest during Super Bowl weekend. The three-night festival will also see performances from Ludacris, Lil Jon, Metro Boomin, and a Quality Control set with Migos, Lil Yachty, and Lil Baby.
