Future Weighs In on R. Kelly: ‘Who Is That?’

The hip-hop and R&B community continues to speak out against R. Kelly.

While promoting his new album and documentary The WIZRD on Power 106’s “The Cruz Show” this week, Future was asked what he thinks of the embattled singer in the wake of Lifetime’s “Surviving R. Kelly” docuseries.

“If R. Kelly wants a track, are you recording with R. Kelly?” asked host J Cruz, to which Future responded, “Man, who is that? I thought we had forgot about that.”

Future, who collaborated with Kelly on “Tear It Up” off 2013’s Black Panties album, went on to clarify his stance. “We’re giving it too much attention. When you give things too much attention, they blow up.” he said.

Following the six-part airing of “Surviving R. Kelly,” Kelly’s music saw a boost in streams, which Future also addressed. “That’s why his music gon’ do what it did ’cause y’all keep talking about it. Stop talking about it—it’ll go away.”

When asked if there’s a “sense of fake outrage” from the public, Future responded. “I don’t know what it is. It’s just too many people talking about it,” he added. “I think behind the scenes, there’s supposed to be things done how they supposed to be done, and stop giving negative attention attention.”

The documentary has also inspired other artists to speak out including Meek Mill, John Legend, Ne-Yo, 6LACK, and Chance the Rapper, who shared his regrets over collaborating with the singer. “Making a song with R. Kelly was a mistake,” Chance told Cassius.

The docuseries, which chronicles allegations of abuse against the singer, has led to an investigation in Georgia. Investigators have reportedly contacted survivors including Asante McGee and Joycelyn Savage, and are also seeking information from others who lived in Kelly’s former Atlanta home.
