Fred the Godson has died after his battle with coronavirus.
The 35-year-old Bronx rapper first revealed his diagnosis earlier this month. He was placed on a ventilator and was showing some signs of improvement, but his health deteriorated in recent days before he succumbed to the deadly disease.
Fred’s last Instagram post was a photo of him in the hospital with an oxygen mask from April 6. “I’m in here wit this Corvus 19 shit! Please keep me in y’all prayers!!!! #godisgreat,” he wrote.
In a recent interview, his wife LeeAnn Jemmott expressed her concern after being told by a doctor that her husband might not make it. “It was just like — he’s gone and he’s gonna die, that’s it,” she told the Bronx’s News 12. “I don’t even know how I felt, I just felt like I was going to die.”
Fred was a prominent figure in New York rap for over a decade. The former XXL Freshman, who collaborated with Diddy, Meek Mill, and Pusha-T, released two projects this year—his solo effort Payback and Training Day, a joint album with Jay Pharoah.
But he was more than just a rapper. He was also a father to two young daughters. “We need him like he is our strength, he is our good vibes, our positivity,” said his wife.
In the wake of his death, friends including Nas, French Montana, and Fat Joe have penned tributes to him on social media. “God have mercy on his soul for he was a good man, a family man as loyal as they come,” said Fat Joe. “I pray that you with PUN and the fellas tell them we gavem hell out here in the world.”
Rest In Peace Fred the Godson
