It’s been over a month since the Surviving R. Kelly documentary dropped and after a flurry of headlines, allegations and more, the singer has turned himself into the Chicago Police.
Friday afternoon (Feb 22.), R. Kelly was charged with ten counts of aggravated sexual abuse and was due in court by Saturday (Feb 23.). His lawyer, Steve Greenberg revealed R. Kelly would turn himself in around 11 p.m. Chicago time, ultimately turning himself in earlier.
Kelly is facing up to 70 years in prison for the charges. Nine of the charges were for sexual abuse involving girls that were between ages 13 and 16. A no-bail warrant was issued for R. Kelly.
Cook County State’s Attorney Kim Foxx spoke on the charges in a press conference revealing the charges included “transmission of semen… upon any part of the body of the victim for the purpose of sexual gratification, during the course of an underlying felony of attempted criminal sexual assault.”
While the lawyer for R. Kelly believes that some of the charges would be associated with his past case, opposing attorney Michael Avenatti stated these new charges will be not evadable by the legendary singer.
“This conclusive video evidence is not the same evidence previously seen and used in connection with the prior criminal matter in which Mr. Kelly was charged nor does it depict the same instances of sexual assault. Further, the time frame of the sexual assaults depicted in the video is within the Illinois statute of limitations,” the statement reads.
R. Kelly left the storied West Side Chicago studio at 7:45 p.m., much earlier than the suggested 11 p.m., flanked by his attorneys and entourage, entered a sprinter and traveled to the South booking precinct of Chicago. His ride to turn himself in was followed by news crews who captured the moment he was placed in handcuffs and carried away, spending the night in jail.
R. Kelly will have his day in court on Friday, March 8, 2019, which happens to be International Women’s Day.
More details on his day and out and more as the details arrive.
