DMX is coming home.
The hip-hop icon is set to be released from a federal prison on Friday morning (Jan. 25), his lawyer tells Vulture.
The 48-year-old rapper, born Earl Simmons, was sentenced to one year in prison for felony tax evasion in March 2018 after pleading guilty to tax fraud in November 2017. He was jailed in late January 2018 after failing a drug test while awaiting sentencing.
“He’s coming home tomorrow,” his lawyer Murray Richman told Vulture. “I spoke to him; he’s very happy. He’s looking forward to being home. He’s never been hotter than now—people have been seeking him out all over.”
When asked if Simmons had any issues while in prison, Richman said, “He’s terrific; he’s been terrific.”
Simmons’ release date is currently listed as Sunday, Jan. 27, but federal prisoners may be released earlier if their scheduled release falls on a weekend.
He will be under supervised release for three years following his release.
