On the hit PE song, “Terminator X to the Edge of Panic,” Chuck D barks the question “Who gives a f*ck about a goddamn Grammy?” And we can play that game if we want to….
You can name all the VMAs, AMAs, BET Awards (both the Hip-Hop one or the main one), Billboards and those other shows, but we know which trophy everyone really wants: The golden Grammophone.
Aside from The Source Award (and for that you can hold your horses), The Grammys is the most coveted achievement an artist could ever aspire to claim.
And the 61st Annual Grammy Awards show showed the music loving public, why we give a f*ck. First because of the diversity that the show (with some pushing) has finally embraced. But secondly, because Hip-Hop and R&B seemed to paint the predominate complexion of the show. One highlight was Bronx’s darling taking centerstage with a heart stopping performance. Nah… not J. Lo.
Cardi B rocked her performance of her chart topping single, “Money” and basically showed the world that her reign as the Queen of Hip-Hop is legit. While that could have been enough for Bardi Gang, The Grammys honored Kulture’s mom with one of the highest awards for rap music.
Cardi B won Best Rap Album, Invasion of Privacy.
As she accepted her award she started her emotional speech with a huge “Whew, chile….” trembling with joy. What made the most impact was that she stepped to the stage with her husband Offset beside her.
She should have been shaking. No woman had ever accomplished this in history. Cardi is now the first solo female rap artist to win Best Rap Album. Lauryn Hill became the first female artist to win this award, but her win was with The Fugees, not as a solo artist.
