It was a big night for Alicia Keys at the 2019 iHeartRadio Music Awards.
The Grammy-winning songstress was honored with the Innovator Award at L.A.’s Microsoft Theater on Thursday (Mar. 14). While accepting the award from Jamie Foxx, she reminisced about her journey, starting out as a “tomboy from Hell’s Kitchen” and learning to love herself.
“I’m finally more myself than I’ve ever been,” said Alicia. “And even though it’s a constant process, I encourage you to continue to find the power and the beauty and the unique story in your own journey.”
She also shouted out some of today’s new artists for inspiring her, including Post Malone, SZA, Tierra Whack, and Billie Eilish. “I want to thank all the artists out here who continue to break the mold, who continue to inspire me,” said Alicia before thanking her husband Swizz Beatz and their sons. “You inspire me to innovate and create and stay strong and positive, and I love y’all.”
Keys, who will release her memoir More Myself in November, also took the stage to perform her new single “Raise a Man” with a special appearance from her son Egypt, who stole the show. After announcing him as “the man that I get to raise,” the talented eight-year-old played piano alongside his mother before showing out with the floss dance.
The Mommy & Me moment I’ve been dreaming of! WOW! Egy I’m in awe of you! You’re so BRAVE and BEAUTIFUL and make me so PROUD!
The feeling I felt with you next to me during this song? FULL BODY CHILLS. Your journey is just beginning and I’m so blessed to #raiseaman like you pic.twitter.com/ttKGwTIRFZ— Alicia Keys (@aliciakeys) March 15, 2019
Taking to social media after the performance, Alicia was beaming with pride. “The Mommy & Me moment I’ve been dreaming of! WOW! Egy I’m in awe of you!” said Alicia. “You’re so BRAVE and BEAUTIFUL and make me so PROUD! The feeling I felt with you next to me during this song? FULL BODY CHILLS. Your journey is just beginning and I’m so blessed to #raiseaman like you.”
Egypt’s résumé is already impressive. At the age of five, he produced “Untitled 07 – 2014 – 2016” for Kendrick Lamar.
Meanwhile, Alicia’s youngest son Genesis was also stealing hearts. While seated in his father’s lap, he waved to Taylor Swift, who couldn’t help but blush.
“Actually my son Genesis I think is maybe tryna take Taylor out later tonight,” joked Alicia during her acceptance speech. “He’s working on it. I’m not sure how it’s gon’ go, but it looks pretty good right now.”
