The White House is reportedly upset that A$AP Rocky didn’t issue a public “thank you” to President Trump over his attempts to pressure the Swedish government to release the rapper from jail.
According to a new report from Yahoo! News, Trump’s team got involved in trying to secure Rocky’s freedom under the condition that they would receive a public thank you.
“The White House didn’t ask for anything. There were no conditions attached, but my condition and Kareem [Lanier]’s condition was that all I’m asking for you guys to do is say thank you,” said Darrell Scott, an Ohio pastor and Trump surrogate, who helped to advocate for the rapper’s release.
According to Scott, Rocky’s manager John Ehmann consented. “If a serial killer gets Rocky out of jail, I would have no problem saying thank you to the serial killer,” Ehmann allegedly said.
Despite Trump’s attempt, a Swedish court convicted Rocky of assault, sentencing him to the time he already served and two years of probation. Rocky previously spent a month in Swedish jail.
Just spoke to @KanyeWest about his friend A$AP Rocky’s incarceration. I will be calling the very talented Prime Minister of Sweden to see what we can do about helping A$AP Rocky. So many people would like to see this quickly resolved!

After his release, the White House was expecting a public acknowledgment that Trump had helped with his case, hoping that his plea for the rapper would help his image with black voters. Rocky thanked his supporters on Instagram, but made no mention of Trump.
When Trump’s team spoke with Ehmann, he reportedly started making excuses about Rocky needing time to travel and rest. Within two days after he was freed, his team stopped responding to text messages from Trump’s people.
Scott told Ehmann, “I hope you guys aren’t going back on what you said you were going to do.”
Rocky apparently wouldn’t even thank the White House behind the scenes. “All he had to do was do a two-minute call to say thank you,” said Scott. “Rocky hasn’t even called us and said, ‘Hey, man, thank you guys. I appreciate it,’ in private. Just in private.”
Lanier, co-chairman of the Urban Revitalization Coalition, attributed this to the potential backlash that Rocky could face for embracing the President. “One of the problems that we have as a culture — and I’m talking about black Americans — is herd mentality,” said Lanier. “Right now it’s popular for those guys to bash President Trump.”
