Q&A With Los Angeles Emcee Hexxx

What was the earliest hip hop memory you can recall?

I was in grade school chillin’ at my school bus stop at 6:30 in the morning. The homie had Doggystyle on cassette tape the day it dropped. First one he played for me was “Gin & Juice”, I was captivated. I wanted to hear more & immediately became a fan of this West Coast rap.

Who’re some of your biggest musical inspirations?

The 90’s was full of wicked shit in rap. From the Flatlinerz to Murder Was the Case, Dr. Dre & B-Real’s “Puppet Master”, “Damien” by DMX, “East 1999” by Bone Thugs-n-Harmony, Esham, ICP…the list goes on & on. I’m a spawn of that era: the Wicked Shit.

Where did your moniker originate

People would comment that my lyrics were demonic & x-rated, so I came up with the abbreviation: He’s Evil & triple X rated.

You recently dropped a new single called “Reaper”. How did that come about?

The instrumental was something I had since early 2019 & would just ride around vibing to it. I was in the studio late one night, I was thinking about my dead homie & his recent passing. I put that shit on & the beat finally started talking to me. Reflecting on how my homie went out & the idea that however I’m living, right or wrong, Imma always do me.

Can we expect a full-length album anytime soon?

For the rest of 2020, it’s singles. But, I am working on a bigger project right now for 2021.

Our most important question: What’s your definition of underground hip hop?

It’s a brotherhood.

How’ve you been dealing with all the craziness that’s happened in 2020?

When it first started, I did some R&R out in the desert. When I got back everything was crazy & fucked up in LA, more than usual. I locked myself up, stayed busy in the lab.

Anything else you’re working on right now?

More merch. More dope videos. And music, as always.

Do you have any advice for anyone wanting to set their foot in as recording artists?

Invest into yourself. Buy your own equipment, you’ll be ahead of the game 100%. Be humble, keep your ego in check & show the fuck up.
