On the one-year anniversary of Mac Miller’s Tiny Desk concert, Ty Dolla $ign paid tribute to his late friend with an emotional performance of their 2016 collaboration, “Cinderella.”
“This for Mac Miller right here, y’all,” said Ty, who was Joined by Thundercat on bass and Justus West on guitar, both of whom played at the Tiny Desk with Mac a year ago.
Emotions were running high as he and the band powered through their stripped-down rendition of the track, which brought Ty and some of the band to tears.
Ty recently visited NPR to record his own Tiny Desk concert, which will be released soon. Once taping wrapped, Ty was reminded that almost one year ago his friend Mac delivered what would be one of his final performances.
Ty and the band then mulled over a few notes before delivering an impromptu performance of their collaboration from Mac’s fourth studio album, The Divine Feminine.
Ty is now readying his new album Tyrone featuring the J. Cole-assisted “Purple Emoji.” The project will showcase his unmistakable sound. “Every time you hear a record come on, you’re gonna know it’s me, automatic, just off of how it sounds,” he told SPIN. “Just like what Timbaland’s done, Dr. Dre’s done, Metro Boomin. All the greatest.”
