New York rap icon JAY-Z is much more than a businessman. The hip-hop mogul is now officially the rap game’s first billionaire.
According to a new Forbes article, Young Hov’s massive empires – ranging from his TIDAL streaming service to Roc Nation – easily give him a billion dollar net worth.
The article opens by recalling a 2010 meeting between the rapper and billionaire Warren Buffet, from which the octogenarian came away impressed. “Jay is teaching in a lot bigger classroom than I’ll ever teach in,” he said. “For a young person growing up, he’s the guy to learn from.” Less than 10 years later, the magazine surveys Shawn Carter’s empire — which spans music, a streaming service, liquor, art real estate and stakes in other companies — and determines that it “conservatively totals $1 billion.” It also notes that he built his own brands: the Rocawear clothing line (sold for $204 million in 2007); D’Ussé, a cognac he co-owns with Bacardi; Tidal, the music-streaming service; and his multifaceted Roc Nation music and sports empire. Rap producer Swizz Beatz has already saluted JAY on his massive financial status and hinted at what’s to now come.
Kasseem “Swizz Beatz” Dean, the superproducer behind some of Jay-Z’s biggest hits (“On To The Next One,” Beyoncé’s “Upgrade U”), looks at Jay-Z as something others can model: “It’s bigger than hip-hop … it’s the blueprint for our culture. A guy that looks like us, sounds like us, loves us, made it to something that we always felt that was above us.” “If he’s a billionaire now, imagine what he’s about to be,” Swizz Beatz says. “Because he’s only just starting.” (FORBES)
