Two of the three victims were transported to local hospitals, and one refused medical treatment at the scene. Hussle ultimately died of gunshot wounds to the head and torso, according to the Los Angeles County coroner’s office.
Law enforcement sources told the Los Angeles Times that the suspect had some type of personal dispute with Hussle that ended in the shooting. Detectives believe the gunman is a gang member, but the motive is more personal in nature.
Just before the shooting, Hussle tweeted: “Having strong enemies is a blessing.”
Surveillance video shows a gunman walking up to Hussle and two other men, who were standing in front of the store in a strip mall on Slauson Avenue. The gunman is seen opening fire before Hussle falls to the ground and the two other victims run away from the gunman.
On Monday night, hundreds of mourners gathered outside the Marathon Clothing store to remember Hussle at a vigil, which turned chaotic when a stampede broke out. Several people were injured as they tried to flee the scene and were trampled. A fight appeared to have triggered the incident after one person possibly pulled out a gun, but no shots were fired.
According to The Times, 19 people were transported to hospitals: two of them are in critical condition, including one hurt in a car accident; two people with serious injuries; and 15 with non-life-threatening injuries.
Hussle was scheduled to meet with LAPD Chief Michel Moore and Police Commission President Steve Soboroff on Monday to talk about gang violence prevention.
Following his death, there has been an outpouring of grief, thoughts, and prayers from Hussle’s fans and peers, including Kendrick Lamar, Drake, Rihanna, Cardi B, and The Game.
