During Thursday night’s acceptance speech, Beyoncé dedicated their award to her late uncle who died HIV.
“We are here to promote love for every human being,” she said. She encouraged the room to look first to friends and family. “Let’s tell them they are loved, tell them they are beautiful, speak out and protect them. And parents, let’s love our kids in their truest form,” said Beyonce. In perhaps the most revealing moment of the evening, Beyonce shared that her Uncle Johnny died of a struggle with HIV. Johnny contributed behind-the-scenes to Destiny’s Child and was a major influence on she and sister Solange, the singer said through tears. She called his loss “one of the most painful experience I’ve ever lived.” (Variety)

Young Hov made sure to acknowledge his openly gay mother during his acceptance speech.
During Jay-Z’s speech he praised his mother, who came out as a lesbian on the groundbreaking track “Smile” from his album 4:44. “I get to follow in her footsteps for spreading love and acceptance and her beautiful speech at the end of the song — and for allowing me to tell her story,” he said. Jay-Z received a GLAAD Special Recognition Award last year for the song and the music video. (Deadline)
Prior to the speech, Hollywood star Shangela performed a Queen Bey-themed medley of hits.
