Virgil Abloh, who’s been taking shots at the moon since he and Kanye were interns in Rome together, said his next collection of Louis Vuitton will be Michael Jackson inspired. Okay, now who else is picturing an LV monogram sparkly glove with the word “GLOVE” written on the inside palm? I know I am and that’s okay. Anything Virgil touches though right now sells like crack in the ’80s. I mean the man sold a clear carry-on for $2,600 bucks because it has a huge X on it and a yellow strap. Hey, I’m not knocking anyone’s hustle or creative vision… but me personally, I’d rather fly round trip to Europe and eat baguettes on the Riviera drinking fine wine with a fine dime whose name I can’t pronounce right.
Anyway, let’s moonwalk back to Louis Vuitton’s Artistic Director and his MJ inspired line to come. In the latest issue of Interview, Virgil spoke about how music drives all of the inspiration behind his work. He stated that he literally can’t work at all without music, but he can work anywhere as long as he can listen to music. Coltrane, Miles Davis and whatever new hip-hop is what you can find him tuned into when in any given London, Paris or Italian office.
“I can’t work in my studio without music. I don’t like silence. I’m listening to John Coltrane. I’m listening to Miles Davis. But I’m also listening to whatever new rap is coming out that week. I have teams in Milan, Italy, London, and America, so as long as I have a fully charged iPhone, I feel like I can change the world,” Abloh said. “I’m talking on that phone, but I’m also constantly listening to music. My next Louis Vuitton collection is going to be based on Michael Jackson, and when I have Michael singing in the background, it’s a different type of shirt, it’s a different kind of boot, it’s a different fit of pants. Music is key.”
We’ll have to wait and see what he comes up with but I hope for Mike’s sake, it’s not that “BAD.” Oh man, what a bad pun. I’m sure I’ll hear about that one from my editor. Either way, let’s all stay tuned to see how Virgil flips this Louis Vuitton x Michael Jackson Collection. Regardless, I’m sure half of us won’t be able to afford it.. yet.
When Mr. Abloh was asked what was coming next beyond the Michael Jackson Collection, he responded simply “I want to design a spaceship.” That’s pretty ambitious VA, but I can see it now, U-OFF-O’s circling your local with the word “HOLY SHIP” written on the side. From South Side to Space, Virgil Abloh is really taking himself to a whole other stratosphere.
