A Musical Transition and Hurt Season’s Sophomore Mixtape

HURT SEASON COVER 6

For many, the music industry is both a monster and a marvel to contend with. No one understands this better than Canadian rapper, singer, producer, and songwriter Hurt Season, whose ability to withstand the pressures of the industry has resulted in the birth of something incredible: his sophomore mixtape.

Hurt Season’s Background

Hurt Season—formerly known as HRT SZN—had already captured the attention of big names in the music industry even before he turned 23. With the eyes of Canadian producer David Foster already on him and rap legend Snoop Dog signing off on his rapping talents, Hurt Season was forced to navigate the growing pressures of the music industry while battling his own struggles, which happened to be addiction.

“This transition from HRT SZN to Hurt Season is a reflection of my growth,” the rapper stated. “I’m no longer afraid of criticism. I’m here to be authentic.”

This need to express himself shines through the music he creates, which draws inspiration from Jean-Michel Basquiat, Rick Owens, as well as the 1990s West Coast underground rap scene.

Past Discography and a Sophomore Mixtape

Hurt Season has worked to create a name for himself over the past few years. His debut single as Hurt Season, “darkstar,” was released alongside a music video on July 8, 2022. The track, which was written by Hurt Season (and credited under his real name, Nick Campbell), Chanler Brant Hendrickson, and Adrian Brown, was produced by Bingx and Adrian “The Boss” Brown. This marked a new beginning for the rapper, who explained that “darkstar” is a reminder to follow the stars and the path they create for you.

His single, “datreesh,” was also released in 2022 and showcased his lyrical talents, which are oftentimes emotionally charged.

“‘datreesh’ contains many emotions experienced through my last breakup,” the rapper states. “The intent of the song is to say my parting words without directly addressing who they are for.”

The track, which was featured on Wordplay and HipHopDX, combines powerful lyrics with a catchy, mellow beat.

“MB4Everything”

With his sophomore mixtape, MB4Everything, Hurt Season has worked to reclaim his place within the music industry. Released from his independent label, Marble Bust Entertainment, the mixtape showcases Hurt Season’s emotional journey, which includes not just the staggering lows that addiction can put people in but the highs that creative aspirations can allow people to soar toward. The emotional depth found within MB4Everything reveals Hurt Season’s talents not just lyrically but musically as well.

Music has always been an escape for the rapper. Fond memories of listening to Santana while in Mexico with his family allowed Hurt Season to process the chaos that life had thrown at him. This newfound transition, as well as the release of his sophomore mixtape, has allowed Hurt Season to regain aspects of himself that could have easily been lost had he not focused his energies and passions on his music career. Hurt Season’s story, and evolution, should be inspiring to anyone who listens to his music.
